Maybe you’re bored at home because the pandemic has shut off the social world or maybe you’re trying new things or maybe you are finally getting to fulfill your New Year’s resolution to learn a new language! Here are some reasons why you should turn your attention to learning an Indian language.

India has over 22 major languages, and thousands of dialects spoken in the various parts of the country. Some Indian languages have a history of over 4000 years old (like Sanskrit).Daunting as it may seem to monolinguals, it is actually not hard to pick up an Indian language. In fact, picking up a basic understanding of one language will pave the path to learning a whole bunch of others!

  1. Make new friends! – There are over one billion people in India! And although there is a significantly large English understanding and speaking population, learning an Indian language will help you develop stronger, deeper connections. Learning an Indian language could help you connect with a lot of people you previously could not. It would break down any barrier hindering effective communication.
  2.  Access to a whole new world of pop culture – India has a big media industry that churns out entertaining content throughout the year. Bollywood or Hindi cinema is world renowned for its entertaining as well as notable filmmaking. Netflix too has been producing quite a number of engaging TV shows in Hindi. Learning an Indian language could help you enjoy a whole new realm of movies, Indie bands and TV shows!
  3. Business Savvy – Indian has been a rising star in the world economy. Multiple MNCs have set up shop in India, and are continuing to establish more branches. Learning an Indian language might help you at your workplace if your company is looking towards India for business relations and clientele.
  4. Did I mention its easy? – Indian languages are phonetic based. This means learning to read and write becomes a much easier task. However, if you are only looking to hone your speaking skills, that too will come easy with a bit of practice!
  5. Gateway for other languages – Most languages in India share a common thread. Therefore, learning one language will make it easier to pick up another one. For example, Urdu and Hindi are quite similar – so much so that learning Hindi would guarantee you mastering basic Urdu in no time!
  6. For a richer travel experience – India is a vibrant land where multiplicities of cultures reside. We have a rich history, heritage and delightful food to offer our guests. India’s geography also stretches across various terrains, so your options as a traveller are many. You can relax at serene beaches in Goa, go hiking in the snowy mountains of Himachal, take road trips to beautiful Ladakh , experience mouthwatering street food in Delhi or visit the number of temples in South India! Wherever you go, a basic understanding of the local language will go a long way.
